South Africa's Ummbila Emoyeni wind farm has entered commercial operation, delivering its first 155 MW and a major new transmission substation in Mpumalanga.
The project, developed by Seriti Green near Bethal, brought 25 turbines online in July 2026, ahead of schedule. It is the first wind farm to operate in Mpumalanga, a province long defined by coal, and it has passed the provincial and national grid tests required for commercial supply.
Phase one is only the beginning. The full Ummbila Emoyeni complex is planned at roughly 900 MW, combining about 750 MW of wind with 150 MW of solar PV and 800 MWh of battery storage. Total committed investment now stands at about R25 billion after a further R10 billion agreement was signed with Standard Bank.
For the electrical supply chain, the telling detail is the grid connection itself. The build included the largest new main transmission substation constructed in Mpumalanga in more than 20 years, completed in roughly 17 months. Projects of this scale succeed or fail on the quality of their switching, protection and connection equipment, and on getting that equipment to site on time.
