he Democratic Republic of Congo is pressing ahead with Inga 3 — the next phase of the Grand Inga vision on the Congo River, potentially the single largest power project on the continent. In 2025 the World Bank approved a US$250 million credit toward the first phase of the US$1 billion Inga 3 Development Programme, laying the groundwork in local infrastructure, skills and jobs.
Inga 3 is expected to deliver between 2,000 and 11,000 MW as it is built out over the coming decade. From 2026, communities in Kongo Central will begin to see early benefits, including a new "Inga Academy" to train young people in construction, operation and maintenance.
Elsewhere in the region, the 147 MW Ruzizi III project (Burundi, DRC and Rwanda) and Cameroon's Nachtigal dam — which reached full capacity in 2025, lifting national generation by roughly 30% — underline Central Africa's accelerating build-out.
