Nigeria, Ghana and their neighbours are stepping up efforts to build a fully synchronised regional electricity grid under the West African Power Pool. A second phase of grid synchronisation — targeted for June 2026 — aims to deepen real-time interconnection between national power systems, allowing electricity to be traded and balanced across borders.
The push complements major national programmes such as Nigeria's Electrification Programme, which is expanding solar mini-grids and standalone systems to unserved communities while the national grid is rehabilitated.
A synchronised regional grid means more cross-border power flows, new interconnectors and rising demand for transmission and distribution infrastructure across West Africa — from substations and switchgear to the cables that carry the load.
