The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) is set to interconnect with the Eastern Africa Power Pool in 2026 — a landmark that will give Southern Africa access to East Africa's hydropower and widen the options for sourcing and trading electricity across the continent.
At the 2026 SADC Sustainable Energy Week, member states prioritised fast-tracking key interconnector projects — including Angola–Namibia, Malawi–Mozambique and Tanzania–Zambia — to strengthen cross-border power trade through SAPP. The World Bank's RETRADE-SAPP initiative is providing technical assistance to support the effort.
Delegates also flagged persistent gaps — inadequate transmission infrastructure, affordability and rural access — that the region is now mobilising to close.
